We Don’t Need You as an Atheist Spokesperson, TJ

09 Feb

Seeing as how a ton of other blogs have already talked about this, I knew I just have to voice my opinion on this matter as well.

TJ Kincaid, a.k.a. “The Amazing Atheist”, is an example of a pretty horrible spokesperson for a group who could do without him. We have great spokespeople covering the spectrum of social discourse and behavior, from Christopher Hitchens to Richard Dawkins to Sam Harris, etc. But what we do not need is a misogynistic, self-important, ignorant pig like TJ to speak for other atheists.

TJ seems to have this straw-man fallacy definition of feminism stuck in that big, empty head of his. He recently defined it as “the idea that we can make both sexes equal by focusing solely on the issues of one of them.” Problem is, that’s not what feminism it at all. For that, we can turn to direct, first-person sources such as the Godless Bitches blog, a feminist blog that recently mentioned the “Not-so-Amazing Atheist”. They corrected TJ’s way-off definition of feminism:

The definition of feminism is the movement for social, cultural, political, and economic equality of men and women. That’s it.

I’m sorry, but I’m not going to listen to a men’s rights activist try to define what feminism is. That would be like listening to a KKK member try to define the importance of race equality, or a homophobe try to define what gay rights are all about. Feminism is not about promoting women’s issues over those of men, or anti-women sexism over anti-male sexism. Yes, male sexism exists, and most of these cases are things that feminists are fighting for as well!

As the Atheist Experience blog pointed out, TJ seems to suffer from a sort of bigot’s Dunning-Kruger Effect, where the more you try to correct him on his bigotry, the more ingrained he becomes, the more he digs his talons into his own bigotry, unable to see it from an outsider’s perspective, unable to see what the big deal is.

But that’s not all. Recently, in a Reddit “Men’s Rights” (lol) thread, TJ goes into full-on crazy-misogynist mode, actually trying to trigger a rape victim by threatening her with rape. He is a disgusting, vile, pathetic excuse for human garbage. These are the kinds of things he said:

I will make you a rape victim if you don’t fuck off.

Yeah. Well, you deserved it. So, fuck you. I hope it happens again soon. I’m tired of being treated like shit by you mean little cunts and then you using your rape as an excuse. Fuck you. I think we should give the guy who raped you a medal. I hope you fucking drown in rape semen, you ugly, mean-spirited cow. Actually, I don’t believe you were ever raped! What man would be tasteless enough to stick his dick into a human cesspool like you? Nice gif of a turd going into my mouth. Is that kind of like the way that rapists dick went in your pussy? Or did he use your asshole? Or was it both? Maybe you should think about it really hard for the next few hours. Relive it as much as possible. You know? Try to recall: was it my pussy or my ass?

No, I’m not mad. I’m just trying to trigger you. It’s not working, I guess. So, I guess the whole triggering thing is bullshit after all?

BTW, you have to admit, when I told you that I hope you drown in rape semen, you got a little wet, didn’t you? It’s okay. We’re friends now. You can share.

I don’t believe in triggering. So, what I did was, in my mind, completely harmless. And you weren’t triggered. So, what was the real harm? You realized I was joking. I even stated that I was. So, for that joke, I deserve to be stabbed? I mean, do you not see how fucked up that is? Are you even a human being?

“I don’t believe in triggering.” Kinda like how Creationists “don’t believe” in evolution.

It’s extremely hard to imagine a person using such vile, foul language against a victim of RAPE, being called out on his behavior, and then completely missing the point on why what he said was wrong. Of course, he has plenty of followers on YouTube who will defend every single word that he says, regardless of the public backlash received, and say such idiotic things as, “You need to watch all of his videos, he always speaks his mind like that!” and, “He has the right to free speech! Why are you trying to take that away from him!” I’m paraphrasing here, but you get the idea. Just look at many of the comments on his recent video about arguing over the internet.

Basically, we don’t need misogynists like TJ as spokespeople for atheism. It just makes us look bad. And in a society (here in America) where atheists are considered evil, and many religious theists are offended at the mere existence of atheists, we could do with a lot less negativity in terms of public relations. In other words, kindly fuck off, TJ.

Update

So apparently TJ submitted — privately I might add — an apology to the person he originally threatened with rape. I like to call it a “non-pology” (click to enlarge):

For the visually impaired, this is what it says:

From terroja (TJ): My comments to you were wrong and I regret them, not just because I’m getting shit for them but because they were genuinely out of line. I was angry and I said stupid things, thinking I was making a point. I realize now that the point I was trying to make was totally overridden by the crudeness and the cruelty with which I expressed myself. For my behavior, I apologize. I realize that you probably will not believe the sincerity of my, or will not accept it, but I apologize nonetheless.

To terroja: I’d be more willing to accept your apology if you were willing to post it in a public space, on your tumblr or on your Facebook page or as a response to the video you made complaining about us. I do not, at this point, forgive you in any way, shape or form. If you are truly remorseful I would encourage you to make a public apology not only to me, but to the others that you might have hurt with your graphic descriptions of rape. Your comments were cruel, it’s true, but you have a chance to make things a little bit better by pointing out to your fanbase that what you did was unacceptable.

From terroja: I don’t normally let other people bully me into doing what they want. Sorry, but a private apology is the best I’m willing to do. I have already publicly stated that what I said was wrong.

You coward. You absolutely spineless, wretched, shitty excuse for a human being. You disgusting, malevolent, piece of human garbage. She wasn’t bullying you, you ignoramus. She specifically said, “I would encourage you to make a public apology.” This is the equivalent of saying you’re going to lynch some niggers, and then apologize to the one black person towards whom you directed that comment. You moron, you complete and utter imbecile… you offended every single person that happened to read your drivel, with the exception of your equally idiotic, shallow, empty-headed fanboys who eat up every piece of garbage that flies from that filthy, revolting mouth of yours.

Yes, that entire paragraph is one, steaming, massive pile of ad hominem, but TJ Kincaid deserves no less. Once he publicly apologizes for his completely sexist and misogynistic behavior, then I will retract every word that I have just typed.

Like that’ll ever happen.

I don’t watch many if his vids but I’m pretty certain he doesn’t consider himself a men’s rights activist. I think he came to that definition as a result of feminists who tell him male sexism is non existent because sexism is fundamentally the denigration of women with respect to men and not the other way around. I ran into one of these kind of feminists not too long ago on the Friendly Atheist blog…

    LeftSidePositive:
“Sexism refers to the institutionalized cultural attitudes that women are inferior to men. Therefore it is not possible to be “sexist” against men.”

    LeftSidePositive:
“You don’t understand the definition of “sexist.” Sexism does not refer to any gender-based prejudice or put-down. It refers to the entire constellation of attitudes in which women are denigrated with respect to men.”

I think TJ was probably trying to point out the absurdity of feminists with this kind of attitude.

While I don’t exactly agree with everything he says, he does make valid points on some of his videos. I do agree however that he is an awful person who thinks is he above the average person.

God. He makes it absolutely impossible to like him. I wanted to like him. I subscribed to him on Youtube a few days ago after watching one of his religion-centric videos. I even used to watch his Distressed Watcher videos back when he was on That Guy With the Glasses.

But then I discovered his views on feminism, and all of the esteem I had begun to build for him vanished in a puff of misogyny. What a tool.
I don’t care if a male has blinders to his own privilege, as long as he doesn’t stick his nose into feminist issues without a goddamn clue. But no.

Dare I say it… on this issue, TJ and Rush Limbaugh are very alike. And they need to zip it.

While I agree with you about TAA being a cunt. Why do you need a spokesperson anyway? Atheism is a personal belief, stop trying to convert it into a rival “religion”

If you actually believe that feminism fights against anti-male sexism, you’ve officially disproven the “atheists are smart” stereotype.

He’s not actually a misogynist. He is very critical about feminism for good reason. They refuse to accept that it is even possible for there to be sexism against men. So ya he points out that a lot of feminist organizations are incredibly hypocritical. This doesn’t make him a misogynist. And with the quote, I agree he definitely crossed the line by 1000 miles but the fact is it still is a joke. A shitty, disgusting joke? absolutely but a joke nonetheless http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KQQ1bzQn0k&feature=youtu.be if you watch this video you’ll clearly see he doesn’t really have any views about “rape being good” and I ‘d challenge you to find one other misogynistic view or quote from him.

I am so damn sick of the ignorance around feminism and what it is. I’m also sick and tired of men dictating what the movement is to women. Instead of listening to what women have to say they are so quick to ‘mansplain’ to us what it is and how it’s affecting society.

I will say only one thing; smart men realise that feminism is working for them as well.

And then i read about that, the sick psychotic coward piece of…. There are many intelligent atheists that can make wonderful videos and respect all living things. He is exactly what theists accuss us to be. Seeing him upsets my stomach.

Feminism, as a term, has become so vague and all-encompassing since its inception (a radical who thinks everything is a patriarchal conspiracy to subvert the powerful female and a woman who just feels like she deserves to have equal pay but isn’t interested in the gender equality issue much further — they can both consider themselves feminists) that it’s very easy to become confused on exactly who truly fits the label “feminist.” Anyways, TJ’s not against all feminists, just the ones that are prone to focusing solely on the sexism directed at women while ignoring that there are plenty of situations where men get treated worse by society than women. Feminists like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvYyGTmcP80
Since his statement of “the idea that we can make both sexes equal by focusing solely on the issues of one of them” was directed that specific group of radical feminists rather than the feminist community at large, I’d argue it’s quite correct in its evaluation of their ideas vs their actions.
Yes, TJ used bad judgement when he purposely tried to a rape victim, yet that is his general way of dealing with issues and it’s more often than not brash.

So the woman can be mean spirited and throw out accusations but can’t receive the same? Such hypocrisy. But she’s a woman so it’s okay.
